Here in Dominica, farmers usually use Glory Cedar to make living fence
posts. They root quickly (and not terribly invasively) and can be kept
trimmed easily and often enough. They provide animal fodder, pepper/tomato
stakes, mulch/compost material, etc. Despite the huge differences in how
quickly plants (or posts) can root in the different environments, I wonder
if there isn't a Northern analogue. Even if it had to be planted beside a
to-rot-soon post to take over as the permanent post when it was strong
enough.

If you are just making a fence, consider a concrete corner post, or
fence braces and anchors for the corners. If all else fails, try sinking
a Schedule 40 iron water pipe for a corner post.
