I agree but please do be care of lumping the people of this country in with the U.S. corporate entity. There are at least 3 U.S.'s (according to Black's law dictionary) but only one United States of America, the land upon which we are living. Dean

Unfortunately, many people who don't really NEED food stamps get them. Our society has turned into a hands out, give me, give me one. Most don't appreciate the simpler things of life. We are also a nation of obese folks. The abuse of the system has gone rampant and corruption in high places has stripped me of faith in the integrity of this nation. Sometimes hardtimes brings us back to a more meaningful reality>>>> healthy soil and sustainable living!

I have a book called "Hungry Planet" which shows a
weeks supply of food for families all over the world. There
are only a few countries where the standard fare is very
basic, simple foods. One example is in Equitor. A family
that lives in the Andes survives mainly on potatoes, goat
milk, eggs and some fresh vegies and other stored vegies
they grow. . They don't think about Food stamps. They
eat very little meat as the livestock they raise is sold
for other basic supplies. . Potato soup is a very
nutricious wholesome food and it is a basic in their diet.
Today the mind set is to not eat the basic home grown
foods.

Newspaper articles about food stamps and low food banks
should make us think about returning to the basics and
raising as much as we can even if on a small plot or patio.
It's always nice to have more resources but if they are
limited that's when you look at what you're doing
to see if there is a way to trim the fat and get the most
for your money. I would assume this group is not about
getting more food from the food bank or not being able to
buy as much soda pop as before. Living on the land would
be a mindset to return to more natural living from our own
two hands.Seeking information about locally grown food from
farmers markets and our own gardens would be a direction I
would expect from this group. Finding ways we can live on
our land is why I joined this group and Farmers markets are
very much a part of living on the land.
Food Stamps are there to benefit those who are disabled
and the working poor. Living on the land is about self
sufficiency and searching out ways to get back to basics, I
would think.
I'm not looking down on those who are still
struggling to find ways to get back to the land and self
sufficiency . How each of us spend our resources is up to
us but we come to groups to get inspiration and learn from
others. If you have good skills for stretching your income
and dealing with hard times share it . Why be defensive?
Not everyone can shop at Farmers Markets because of
location or other reasons but it certainly is a good source
of very good quality food when you can get to one and it
supports the local growers. I'm using large letters
because some people have visual disabilities.
