Well Apple has never wanted to sell to the commodity crowd. I suppose if the contact is too expensive for an iPhone we could always go with a One Laptop Per Child with Skype or some other VoIP service running in mesh mode. :)
I am kind of bummed about the 8 gig limit. I wanted more storage movies to play widescreen while on airplanes. And what about airplanes? Do I have to keep the iPhone turned off because it is a phone? Hopefully it will have some kind of airplane mode that will turn the phone and GPS off but allow use of the iPod functions.

No one has yet mentioned that $500 is just the starting point.

In addition, if the experience with Cingular and the Treo are
any indication, Cingular will require that you also have a data
contract on top of a phone contract. It's probably not any good
without an unlimited plan, so that's another $19.99/month on top
of the monthly phone costs! I love the look of the iPhone, but my
guess is that the ongoing costs will be a real deal breaker for
anyone other than business travelers.
Cheers,
