2) $500? I can't describe, on a family-friendly list, the things that
phone would have to do to be worth $500. However, I have never been
much enchanted by the whole concept of smartphones and PDAs and such,
so maybe that's a great price, I dunno. It just seems, like... wow.
If I want one, should I sell a kidney on Ebay *now* to avoid the rush?
Like I say, though, I may just be misinformed, and am totally open to
being told that, no, really, that's a *steal*.

No one has yet mentioned that $500 is just the starting point.
From there you *must* have a 2 year contract with Cingular.
In addition, if the experience with Cingular and the Treo are
any indication, Cingular will require that you also have a data
contract on top of a phone contract. It's probably not any good
without an unlimited plan, so that's another $19.99/month on top
of the monthly phone costs! I love the look of the iPhone, but my
guess is that the ongoing costs will be a real deal breaker for
anyone other than business travelers.

Cheers,
