cat6 is all fine and dandy. however, i paid $450 per 1000' box due to customer specs for cat6 plenum cable and pay $55 per 1000' box for cat5e non plenum. the only difference technically is that cat6 goes up to 10 Gb. cat5e takes you to 1 Gb. not many folks have 10 Gb components available.

so, you can put it in for the future; however, you won't be able to do much with it now.

Jim

I would definitely suggest running at least 2 coax and 2 cat6 or better
to every single room. The cat6 can be used for either networking
or phone. That's what I had done with my house. My builder also
let me come in and run conduit other places where I didn't have cables.
You also may want to run speaker wire and possibly control wire to
control lights, etc... It's probably not cost effective to run fiber, but if
you really want a fast network that the NSA can't sniff using Tempest
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TEMPEST ) vans, that's the way to go. :-)

If you are thinking satellite instead of cable you might want to run 2 rg6u
runs to each TV location as that will let you get HD, foreign language
programming, local channels and record 2 programs at once.

Hi All,

I'm just about to get a house built, and wondering if I should include
cat
5e/6 wiring in the contract (from each room to a patch panel in the
garage) - is it worth doing or should I just have xBox/Vonage in the same
room as the cable modem and go wireless for anything else ??

If the builder can't do it, I'd have to bring in another contractor -
suggestions/recommendations ??

Any other thoughts ?

TIA
