I'll give it a try. I left the old 256 MB chip in it when I bought new RAM

Where did you get the RAM? Chances are it's not the origianl chip that's the problem.

Matusiak and I talked about my whacked machine the other night. We
both conclude it must be a hardware problem but I don't know of any way
to diagnose it so I guess I'll take it to Apple for a repair.

I had a similar random-freeze problem with my old Blue-n-White G3.
Your issue might not be the same as mine, o'course, but mine went away when
I replaced one of the RAM modules. All of a sudden I had an extremely
reliable machine again. If you have extra RAM around, or if you have enough
RAM that you can take your modules out one at a time and still boot OSX,
give it a shot - you might get lucky like I did.
