Oh yeah, I know a good bit about National City Lines and General Motors pulling up the tracks. But I think it's hard to call it a conspiracy theory. The thing is, at the time people thought cars were modern, and the way to go. Just like Internet Access. ;) People perceived taking the rail up almost as an infrastructure improvement, so I think that's why not many complained.
