The current strategy sounds a lot like an old western: a particularly heinous
crime is committed, and the local sheriff rounds up a known criminal to hang
on the grounds he is probably guilty of something anyway.

I agree something needs to be done about terrorism, but doubt going in with
an army is going to be effective. My understanding of the organization of
terrorist cells is they're so decentralized the only way to even find out
who's in the group is to infiltrate it from multiple levels. There's no way
the US can take the lead in this since this type of espionage requires an
insider, which can only be done in cooperation with local security
organizations with the contacts and people who can mix freely with the
population.
