Really?
 Didn't know that.

I do remember as a kid one of the neighbors did have plumbing in their house.
They collected rainwater off the roof, which went into wooden barrels that
had lids on them.  I do remember algae in those barrels (this was north of
Chicago so not deep south).  Maybe there were times when the lid wasn't on?
Don't know.

I just remember seeing it whenever I was visiting and my then 12 year old
girlfriend would go fetch water from the barrel and then  boil the water on
the stove before we made anything to drink.

Block the light and you eliminate the problem.

This is the recipe.  I made a triple sized batch.

1/2 cup CHEDDAR CHEESE cubed
1 JALAPENO seeded, minced
1/3 cup BUTTER, cubed
3/4 cup FLOUR
1/4 cup CORNMEAL
1/2 tsp SALT
1/4 tsp CHILI POWDER
1/4 tsp DRY MUSTARD
4 Tblsp COLD WATER

Process cheese and jalapeno in food processor until in about 1/4" pieces,
then add butter, and process until in pea size pieces.

(Note, a blender doesn't work for the above.  Everything just gets stuck.
Adding in the flour and working in small amounts gets it just right however.
Also, I left in the seeds for some extra heat.)

Add add the dry ingredients and pulse on/off until well chopped/blended.

Sprinkle cold water over the mixture and mix just until a dough ball forms.

(Note this didn't work in the blender.  Hand mixing/kneading worked just fine
on a slightly floured board.)

Refrigerate the dough ball for about 1 hr.

Preheat oven 400 degrees.

Using small pieces, roll out the dough on a floured board until about 1/8" to
1/4" thick.  Cut into various shapes with either cookie cutters or random
shapes with a pizza cutter.

Place on ungreased baking sheet.  Bake about 10 mins.

(Note, the thinner you roll the crispier.  I found at 1/4" they are thick
crackers and not very crunchy.  Also had to flip them over to cook both
sides.  The original recipe said to prick each piece with a fork.  They stay
flat that way.  I didn't prick a bunch of them and those expanded like
Cheese-It type crackers.)

Hey all--I'm happy to report we measured again this weekend (it's been
drizzling) and **finally** we have 2-1/2 feet of water in the bottom of
our pioneer well. I don't think this is a lot, but at least it is
something. Having never run out of water before, and not knowing the
present recharge rate (seems slow) this is kind of like finding gold, we
don't want to spend it too soon!

Last week I contracted with a bottled spring water company to deliver
drinking water every three weeks. They were amazed at how much I wanted
for a 2 person household, but all we drink is water, tea, and coffee. It
was so luxurious last night to actually take a very brief hot indoor
shower without the smell of rotten eggs!

Our plan is to keep track of the rainfall, our use of the water, and the
water level on a daily basis until we develop an understanding of how
it's working. I would love to run a load of laundry, but not at the
expense of my shower! BTW, our well turned out to be 45 deep, a little
deeper than we were told. We also lowered a candle and it didn't burn
out. I'm wondering if we should go down in there to dig it out a little
deeper while it is still knee deep? Probably a lot of gravel from past
floods at the bottom. Any spelunkers out there with advice?
