No can do on cheating. That is not me.
Here's my philosophy Bob: The deer have to have a chance. I don't
think hunting from 30 feet up is fair. I like looking for 'signs' and
trails and trying to out-think the deer. Where will she be? Which way
will she come down and where should I be for the best/safest shot?
I've never actually killed a deer, so maybe you can say that I need to
change my philosophy and start baiting or salting or hunting from a
stand, using attractants, etc. I figure there are enough trophy
hunters that do that who are willing to share their kills with me that I
don't have to do it, too. In this area, however, about half the people
share my philosophy, and usually only take 1-3 a year for food, not the
12 or so we are allowed. Most are not trophy hunters, just putting food
in the freezer. In a good year, all the best hunters make sure that all
the neighbors have as many deer in the freezer as they need or want.
While the season opens here in October, the best hunting is after it
gets colder in December. Really, the season is just now gearing up.
It's always fun when someone gets a nice deer. It truly is something to
celebrate, so once the deer is on the pole and hanging, you call the
neighbors and everyone comes to look, hear the story, have coffee, hot
chocolate, or cider, and visit. Depending on who got the kill, maybe
there is help in cutting it up, and if the person already has a freezer
full, he may even say bring your cooler and take some home.
Ron gets one or more a year, and usually someone gives us a deer, too.
This year, I am trying harder to get out there more. I think I have
been hunting maybe 5 or 6 times this year, only once during the morning,
mostly in the late afternoon.
Last night, we had cubed steak for dinner(venison of course). It was
fork tender and delicious, maybe the best cubed steak ever.
I'm heading out again..wish me luck

Thanks bev. 'how's the weather ( and the deer hunting possibilities)? I think, by now, I might cheat a bit with some of the rules and maybe put out a stack of apples and a salt lick downwind of my 'stand' ;-) . I would enjoy seeing a picture of your
or ron's deer on your facebook,
