They are one of the most tropical plants in the garden. No matter when they
are planted, they put on weak vine growth and no tuber growth until the soil
reaches a certain temperature and maintians it. Sweet potatoes planted here
in
May will often put on a half dozen leaves and then just wait for the warmth
they require, and often they wait until July, although late June is more
common. Then just as soon as the ground begins to cool in September, they
stop.
They don't die until frost, but if the ground cools any they stop growing.
You
are farther north in central Ill, but we are at a much higher elevation.
It's
very cool here in the spring.

Two other iffy factors in this climate are rainfall, they will not grow in
the dry, and deer. Deer will detect that you have a patch of sweet potatoes
from five miles away and come to eat off all the foliage.
