Thank you James for this hillarious story! I will think of it as we eat our boring Vardamans. Ha ha. Do you have a tasty variety you'd recommend?
You probaby can't get road salt where you are, can you??
Nope, they use river sand on the bridges the few times it freezes in the winter. All of our "drive friendly" signs fold down to "watch for ice on bridge" signs, and stay that way until spring, when we can drive friendly again. The "watch for water over the road" signs are up year round <g>

Our soil tests at 7.5 in alkalinity, so it doesn't need any lime. Other than our own chicken manure compost, and the mulchy creek dirt we "mine", about the only local source we have for acidic material is cedar (juniper) pulp from a local fragrance oil extractor. A lot of locals use it as top dressing for flowerbeds, but I'm kind of skeptical about using it in the garden because not much grows under these trees and I've heard their roots put off a substance that inhibits other plant roots from growing (at the moment, I forget the term for this). Straw is not sold here, and all the hay is Bermuda, a foe of the garden. Bales of alfalfa are available, but not cheap.
