I get kind of choked up thinking about it, how special it was but how normal it felt at the time. Above all she was really an inspirational person that continued her quest to beautify roadsides with wildflowers long after her husband and all the politics where gone.

Yes, I did. She was a very fine lady, and I had the pleasure of spending time with her on many occasions. She believed the main reason you should plant wildflowers was joy. I liked that. She always came to our employee Christmas dinner party. She had a dibilitating stroke the last year I was there and it broke my heart she couldn't sing the carols with us.

Sometimes she'd take my arm and I'd escort her (along with several secret service) around the gardens. It was one of the perks of my job. Her macular degeneration was pretty bad by then, but she could still recognize the flowers. Amazingly, she could meet young people and know instantly to whom they were related. I've visited the ranch and sat on her bed with her to talk. Her house had lots of interesting things but it was very lived in and comfortable in a homey way. She bought me pecan pie at a cafe once. I photographed her at botanical conferences. I have a great photo of her and I and my Dachshund (who also passed away last year) who was dressed as a docent.

Sage, I've been meaning to ask. I know you worked with the Wildflower's project. Did you ever meet or spend time with Lady Bird Johnson?

I'd seen enough of W as governor to know I didn't
want him to be my president... both of us were living in Austin at the time. Laura was involved in the Texas Book Festival, and I was glad to know somebody in that family reads.
