Wow, sure glad I don't live in your states! If the book exists in a library OR college libarry anywhere, I can get it from my little bitty "Can't Get Here From There" Nowheresville library. Walk in, check the online searchy function thingy and then fill out the card. A week or two, sometimes more because someone somewhere might have it checked out, and I've got any book in the world!

Libraries use to "disappear" Henry Miller and Wm. S. Burroughs. Now, it is more likely to be provocative political lit; and the bent dependent on where you live.

very hard to find certain conservative authors in urban libraries. Librarians must receive many requests first, and then still get in a snit. Librarians have much power in community, as do booksellers. Internet has thankfully mediated much of that power ..... bobford

This is true here. I don't use the library much because
they don't often order books I read. The general
population wants fluffy fiction, so that's what they
serve. All controversial books conveniently
"disappear"
from their holdings, no doubt incinerated in someone's
burn pile.

But they provide good kid's programs and Internet
access,
and a charming location for community building so we
always help them raise money. They get almost nothing from
the government.
