I talked with the local maintenance manager at the dealer: this is a well known problem. Costs some $1500 to fix. Cracked EGR cooler.

This puts out a big "steam screen" when it's happening. This is not smoke as if oil was gettin into a cylender - it does not smell like that. Water/coolant gets into the exhaust and comes out looking like a smoke screen. Not a BIG danger to the engine if happening moderately, but it will not get better, and stop leak will not work.

!Ford recommends removing the CAB of the truck to get at the engine where this thing is located!

Folks on a ford truck diesel discussion list agree that it is the EGR cooler most likely. Known problem. Part has been redesigned.
