I have listened to what everyone else thinks, so I guess I will tell what I
think.  Having a degree in history, I naturally look to the past.  We are not
living in 1929, or maybe 1930.  The government is now bailing out the big
players while letting all of the little guys go under.  Just as it did in
1930.  What will happen.  I think we are in for a major depression.  The
difference from the last one is that then the government was almost debt free
and the programs instituted effectively transferred debt from the private
sector the government.  Now most of the people are further in debt, via
credit cards, than they were in 1929, but in addition, the government is also
in debt.  As the economy continues to deteriorate, most of the credit card
debt will be erased.  The mortgages will be foreclosed and banks will fail.
Those few people who are on land and know how to raise what they eat may be
alright, but most of the people, who live in cities
are in trouble.  They do not know how to grow food and don't know how to
learn.  From those city people I have talked to I do not think they will go
to the country as they are scared to do so.  Unless something drastic is
started, and fairly soon, the results will be very bad.  Just my opinion.  I
am very willing to be proved wrong.

Don, you have a better understanding of the intracacies than I could gather
from
reading the material I have read.  I just don't understand, why being debt
free is good.  I have always believed that until recently.  I wish I had
leveraged all of my hard assets into cash a few years ago.  Everyoner one else
walks away from their responsibilities with no shame.  What benefit did I
receive by living responsibly?.............bobford

It is all somewhat confusing.  The financial crisis that all were telling us
would be over by the 3Q but is instead slipping deeper and deeper.  The
unemployment numbers are growing.  The real number for the unemployment is a
bit over 11% and growing.

Early in this crisis the Fed dumped tons of money in the system, that is how
he got the name Helicopter Ben.  The ECB did the same all under the notion
that the US crisis could be decoupled from the rest of the world.  The Euro
soared against the dollar and oil prices soared.  Then it is noticed that
there is no such thing as a decoupling in a global market.

The euro is falling which is one of the things making oil cheaper.  As the
worldwide economy starts to sink oil consumption has fallen and so have
prices.

Some of that money dumped into the system went into oil futures, some when
into good futures, some just went but a good share of it stopped in the
member banks coffers.  They are concerned about a liquidity crisis and need
to hang on to the money.  In response the fed opened the discount window to
other less well regulated institutions.

Dumping all that money has significantly increased the risk of hyper
inflation but the Fed cannot fight inflation without further forging the
economy down.  I have no idea how much the plunge protection team has put
into Wall Street index funds but it does not appear to be working.

Where is it headed and what should we do?  I have no idea and from the looks
of things neither does Paulson or Bernake.  As mentioned in the WSJ article,
this is another huge problem that will be inherited by the next
administration.

Stealing a line from Gene, we as homesteaders may be better poised to
survive the coming economic storm.  If you have minimal debt, can grow and
process at least some of your own food, can hunker down.

My theory is that in the last 7 years we, as a nation, have grown so used to
having the constitution ignored that we don't even blink and eye anymore.
Sad state of affairs that could bring down the nation.

So , if the elected officials are committing felonies by disregarding their
constitutional oaths, and the appointed officials, beauracrats and CEOs, CFOs,
and others are "unconstitutionally" and feloniously stealing our
money, why is no-one concerned?  Why is no one on their way to indictment and
prison?
That's part of the question in my original
intent.......................bobford

No.  The Fed can print money, but what the government spends can not be
authorized by any other inity.  It is specified in the Constitution.

When congress abrogated its constitutional authority to produce currency and
made the federal reserve the de facto constitutionally empowered central bank,
didn't that issue become resolved?   .....bobford

What everyone seems to forget about this bailout, is that it is not legal.
The constitution states that all moneys spent by the government must be
authorized by congress and this money was not so authorized.

It's good exercise :>) I have lots of small stuff that I'm thinning,
etc, so don't have to split a lot. If it's over 8 inches thick, I like
to split some of it, anyway. It does cure faster when split and I get
better firewood from older trees, makes better coals.

Oak and Maple split best for me. Sweet Gum and now Elm are tough,
tough to split. Hickory is not the easiest.
