Hello everyone,
I've been a lurker here for awhile and I finally have a question for all of
you.  Has anyone tried to use solar tubes to bring in light to grow
vegetables?  I live in a huge hardwood forrest, don't want to cut the trees
and have sooo many deer that growing veggies outside is almost impossible.  I
do have a clear spot over my house that gets sun so I thought if I could
install some solar tubes and run them to the basement, I could garden there
without increasing my electric usage (bad for the planet and my pocketbook)
and not fattening up the local deer population.  Any and all thoughts are
appreciated.

A challenge is often an opportunity. You caused me to flash on a place
that might urge you to use the special opportunities that a ravine or
gulch presents for a spectacular garden. Chris and I visited this
botannical garden in Hawaii, on the big island. Not the famous one
just north of Hilo, over on the wet side of the island north of Hilo.
This one is north of Kona. It has a deep ravine going down through the
middle of the property that carries rainfall from Mauna Kea down
through the Kohala mountains and on to the ocean.

Okay, Google helped me find it. It is called The Garden of Pua Mau
Place at Keanahalululu Gulch. You can view it at this Web site:
http://www.us.totaltravel.com/link.asp?fida8498

We loved it. In addition to the gardens the place has fantastical
sculpture. For the grandsons we took a photo of me astride a giant
preying mantis, making as if I were wrestling it into submission. Hah!
Enjoy and be inspired!

Deb in Indiana,

There *may* be a big difference between "light" and "light good for
plants". The plants need UV to a more or less degree depending on the
plant. I would expect that solar tubes of normal (affordable) sort
would not let much UV get to your plants in the basement.

No doubt others will have more authoritative information.
