Well, in this world reading is a need. Son #3 is a video game whiz kid. He started playing when he was 3 or 4. By 5 he was reading at a high school level. Why? Because he wanted to. Because no one was going to sit around and read all the directions to all the games.

Youngest learned to read, by herself, because she wanted to read books because the big kids were. She demanded that they "tell me the words" as she'd find them in books. At a local store she found what is called Fridge Poetry which is a bunch of magnet with individual words on them. She'd put them together and then grab one of the bigger kids and make them read what she "wrote." Then she discovered Wheel of Fortune. Before she was 5 she was reading. At the local library she checked out books on tape and would plug in and then follow along in the books.

ALL kids want to learn and unschooling kids find ways to learn themselves BECAUSE the desire to learn hasn't been killed in them!

That might be true if there were such a world, but we
know there is such a thing.
Walking is a basic natural need, reading is not.

Children want to learn, but they are indiscriminate
about what they want to learn.
