I read those things too and the notion about 'certain soils or water'. But
when the investigators tried to find what was in common among all those sundry
locations about the globe, they were flummoxed.
I recall that the premise on Hunzakut water was that it was from glacier melt and runoff. The implication was that the glaciers grind stones and thus the water contained high mineral levels. Such water is sometimes referred to as "glacial milk."
As for soil, selenium seems to lessen the incidence of some cancers and heart disease. Some believe magnesium decreases heart disease. Many of the areas of high soil magnesium content also have some of the longest-lived Americans. What I take from such premises is that it is important that my garden soil be as sufficient as possible in all nutrients including micronutrients. Mining soil via monoculture of wheat, corn, etc. seems to me certain to deplete certain substances that are not replaced by typical NPK fertilizers and lime.
What the DID observe about
all those populations was that almost all their food came from only a few
hundred yards from where they lived. It seemed it was food from the same source
(albeit organic and low on the food chain for the most part as well) all their
lives that was a determining factor. Talk about locavores!
That is another of my unprovable beliefs, that eating local food is more healthful. I can only speculate on the reasons. I am content to simply think of it as more natural.

Lisa, first ask why you got a cold? Best probabilities are stress,
negative thoughts and an incomplete diet. I am not sure how many years
now that I have not had a cold. If I feel one coming on I do one
thing: I stop eating. It works.
At the time I was thinking of there were six of us living under one roof
(now five) and our lives involved multiple trips to the 'outside world'
(doctors offices, grocery stores, social events, etc.) where you run into
people that are usually worse off than you. We're not perfect but our diet
is good and definitely healthier than most. As mentioned earlier, our food
is our health insurance. I'm a label reader. We do not do high fructose corn
syrup nor processed foods except for a frozen pizza on Saturday night if
hubby is not home (at a gig) and doesn't make it from scratch. That's our
'cheat.' Diet is not the problem.
We don't get a cold every winter but when we do they are short lived and do
not involve a trip to the doctor. Next time I feel that I'm getting ill,
I'll go to bed and quit eating. We're seldom sick, when I mentioned it was
almost in passing.
We have Stress. Bingo. We have been foster care providers since 6/06 taking
care of one client 24/7 (two clients for 10 weeks earlier this year and will
get a new second client by Autumn), he has a few interesting diagnoses and a
myriad of complications (like when he steals something from us every quarter
or so, we find item and deal with it). We have two sons living at home (now
18 and soon to be 13) and issues that normally occur w/ teen boys. My
husband runs a music store in addition to trying his darndest to be a
professional working musician, and last but hopefully not least, we home
school the youngest. Then there's the ordinary stuff that adds to the mix
like cooking dinner from scratch, attempting to garden, keeping the house
picked up in case a Social Worker pops in for an 'unannounced visit' (ugh!),
running youngest to soccer, running the live-in guy to his appointments and
getting oldest son to ponder having a life outside of living with his
parents until he's 30.
Our lives are not much different than others, most families these days
experience stress of one kind of another. I'm not complaining. This is how
it is. In five years it will be drastically different. My mantra is "This is
only temporary......"
Since you mentioned negative thoughts, I'll clarify the little evil black
bubbles can and do occur. Perhaps some of you experience similar. Worrying
about oldest son or dealing with the live-in client when he's been caught
stealing. If we're concerned about our budget. On days when home schooling
is a frustrating process (usually it's wonderful in the truest sense but not
always). When we think about our lovely President, the war, and the entire
state of the economy. LOTS of negativity there particularly when I allow
myself to think about the state of things connected to my kids and future
grandkids (being hopeful, ha!) future. Trying not to go there but it
happens. As a whole we're not negative people, but realists. Try to let it
go.
We want to learn how to make beer this year--and home made fruit wine. Not
that I necessarily think of that in connection with stress. Why would I do
that?
For me, I've always become ill when I'm short on sleep a few nights in a
row. Every time. I purposely get at least 8 hours a night most nights, so
does Scott. I'm 'training' my sons to do the same since they are jinxed by
being offspring of people who need 8 hours to stay healthy and function.
I think that if someone is for some reason unable to obtain a good
diet, then certain supplements might ward off illness.
Even when you have a great diet certain supplements can help. That's all I'm
saying, nothing more.
