On the field trip we saw a property that had followed
these principles for 20+ years . . . the owner earned about as much from
timber sales and from payments to keep this in wildlife habitat as he would have from a cash lease for crops . . . .

Missouri is very good about working with landowners. As ninety-three percent of Missouri land is held privately, the state needs us to support the various programs desired by the populace, like hunting, fishing, birdwatching, hiking, camping, floating, etc. Not well known is that Missouri citizens passed a one-eighth cent sales tax 30 years ago that funds the Department Conservation. The Missouri Design for Conservation is a model for other states.
