Just to clarify, Chaz was talking about running a cable from the line-out on his receiver to the input on his laptop, which would be *after* the receiver's phono preamp and thus after its RIAA EQ.

If I were going to do a lot of vinyl, I'd probably want to get some kind of outboard box, such as the Art Phono Plus you're talking about, with a big fat gain knob, and at least one light (preferably multiple lights acting as a level meter, but at least a clip light). It's a pain in the ass to try to successfully manage gain when you're running from your stereo line-out into the mic input of a laptop. Much easier to twist a knob on the box that has the A->D in it.

But strictly speaking, if you've got some kind of phono preamp already, as pretty much any receiver would have, you'd just need that $4 cable.

No need to spend more than five bucks to do this!

Maybe, maybe not. The pre-amp stage of most turntable amps employs an EQ curve (often the "RIAA Curve") that increases bass response and cuts treble. Not so critical if you're digitizing Nils 45's, but definitely a good thing if you're trying to capture say, Massacre.

Speaking of the vinyl of Killing Time sounds a million times better than any of the three different CD versions. They must have fucked up the original tapes or something. That's a pretty good reason to digitize some vinyl. -- ch-scene: the list that mirrors alt.music.chapel-hill --
