Hi Sindi,

Once again, Sindi to the rescue! Thanks!

When i first read your reply to me, i was about to
respond negatively to almost all of your suggestions,
because i know exactly which static ip i want, and
i already know the addresses for my gateway and dns.

But before i wrote all of that to you, i took a look
at /usr/share/udhcpc/default.script, and sure enough,
i was not using the correct syntax for the #route add
command. If only these things could be more standardized
in Linux!

Now my compaq is using the static ip that i want,
and it's connected to the internet. Thanks again!

To answer your question about what i do with all those
networked laptops: mostly, waste a lot of electricity! ;-)

But seriously ... the reason i have so many is because
they have helped me learn a lot about Linux, by forcing
me to figure out how to make various distros get video,
audio, and wifi working on such old equipment.

I plan to eventually give two of these away: one to my
toddler daughter, and one to my mom, who really doesn't
want one (she's very old now) but it would be nice to email
photos and videos of said toddler, taken on my cell phone,
to her.
