Only problem now is, neither FreeDOS 1.0 or MS-DOS 6.22 will boot. MS-DOS hangs after saying "Starting MS-DOS..." and FreeDOS complains about an invalid opcode and hangs.

What other way can I use to install BL?

Yes.
(1) use fdisk to create Linux partiton
(2) use mke2fs to create ext2 filesystem
(3) execute:  install-to-hd
