You will need more colors to run Opera 8. I suggest
using BL3 instead

Since he already has BL2 installed and configured, I
would suggest that he keep the BL2 platform and simply
add a better Xserver (from Slackware 7.1). The most
common Xserver is xsvga.tgz, but there are several
other possibilities (it depends on the video card).
The BL2 FAQ has more information on this.

The uclibc-static BL3 Xvesa works fine in BL2 with most video chips and is about 869K. SVGA server is over 3MB.

Xvesa crashes with neomagic chips (in laptops) but Xfbdev works (unless you switch VTs or try to run certain programs such as Magicgraph or Abiword).

Xorg has precompiled Xvesa for lib5 and glibc, 893K.
Is there some advantage to using glibc instead of uclibc Xvesa?

Copies are at:
http://keesan.freeshell.org/Xtinyx-libc5.tgz
http://keesan.freeshell.org/Xtinyx-glibc221.tgz

which include recent drivers for specific video chips such as
i810 (all-in-one boards)
sis530 " "
chips (found in laptops)
trio
trident
savage
Xfbdev (like Xvesa but works with neomagic).

All under 1MB.

Would the XF86Config file from the BL3 no-xvesa.tgz work in BL2 (at up to 800x600 resolution)? X is a pain to set up without it or Xvesa.

How would you suggest using Xvesa in BL2?
I use an alias in /root/.profile
alias X='xinit -- /usr/X11R6/bin/Xvesa -screen 800x600x24'
And others for different resolutions and color depths.
Xvesa does not need an XF86Config, nor does Xfbdev (but the latter needs a framebuffer kernel).

Cheers,
Steven

, which comes with Xvesa, a standard video driver that provides 24-bit color
with most video cards (not neomagic but I have a solution for that).
