What address did you assign (using ifconfig)?
What other active addresses are on that network?
After you assign the address, enter:
--------
ifconfig
--------
That should show you that the eth0 interface is alive.
Then ping one of the other active addresses:
-----------------
ping xxx.xx.xxx.x
-----------------
Does that succeed? If not, execute:
--------
ifconfig
--------
And look at the last three lines for any faults.
