AFAIK you simply run ssh from a local xterm,
and (after you have logged in) you execute
any X executable on the remote system. The
output should appear on your local screen.

I tried this as follows (in BL2) on my one computer
(which makes me both local and remote systems):

First possible issue: this method was designed
for two systems (local/remote). Trying to run
it on one computer (via localhost) causes
complications.

Laptop with BL3.4, dbclient, wireless card.
Desktop with BL2.1 dropbear, wired card.
Netgear wireless router, with desktop plugged into it via cable.
Running udhcpc assigns 192.168.0.2 to desktop and .3 to laptop.
It also replaces resolv.conf with 192.168.0.1 (router IP).
I put back resolv.conf from backup and will assign IPs manually
since my DNS numbers ought to work even at the library instead of theirs.

I can ping and send/receive between computers now.

On desktop, dropbear.
On laptop, dbclient user AT 192.168.0.2

as root, type dropbear (enter) to start the server
('remote system') log in as user on the same terminal
as user, start x and rxvt (or start them as root,
then log in as user)

Second possible issue: I'm not sure rxvt behaves
like xterm in this regard. rxvt should, but the
information I have specifies xterm.

I have rxvt and xterm and will try xterm later. Am online in an rxvt.

dbclient user AT 127.0.0.1 (loopback IP)

Third possible issue: the information I have
specifies ssh/sshd not dbclient/dropbear. It
is quite possible that dropbear does not serve
X applications automatically.

I don't have sshd.

y, give password, get logged in

type opera (actually my script to use it without installing)
opera: cannot connect to X server

Fourth possible issue: your not-installed opera
is a bad choice. Try something simpler, something
that is actually correctly installed on the remote
system.

xv did not work either.
Cannot open display.

What do I try next?

Immediately after logging into the remote system, do:
----------------------------
export DISPLAY=192.168.1.7:0
----------------------------

I tried exporting from a terminal on the desktop, or one on the laptop.
From one on the laptop (after logging in ) I get messages about Xlib not
just connection refused.

That address (192.168.1.7) is just an example.
Use the real address of your local system.

Then execute an X application on the remote
system (start off with a simple one, like a wm).

If I log in, then then start X on the laptop, it appears on the desktop. I think I should be getting the opposite effect. I am now typing on the desktop in an rxvt in X that I started by typing on the laptop (after logging into the desktop as user).

I posted a dropbear uclibc package. Can you try it on two computers connected via ethernet and list exactly what worked, if it works?

Cheers,
Steven
