Hello,

I'm pretty much a newbie at linux, and not the best with computers, but wanted
to 'save' the ol' Gateway 2000 486 upstairs. It doesn't have any networking
software either, so I'm trying to install via FD boot.

However, it boots with the 5.25 inch FD drive, not the normal ~3 inch FD
drive,
and nothing in the BIOS as far as I see allows me to change the boot drive,
and
it won't read the first disk, but I know the first disk is good.

Can you unplug the 5.25" FD?

Try installing to hard drive instead in a baslin directory, and if you have problems with that, type F5 while you are booting to skip loading any drivers that might interfere with booting using loadlin.

Steven can explain how to split up the 2MB BL3 zip file for hard drive use into two pieces that will fit on 1.44MB floppy disk.

BL comes without the /dev needed for 360K disks. You can mknod /dev/fd1d360 b 2 5 (if you can get the drive to be B: instead of A:) so BL will read 360K and the changes are saved permanently in the hard drive BL3 (not on the floppy disk version). I threw out my 1.2MB 5.25" drives but there

In all my BIOS I can set the first floppy drive to A: and the second to B: but Gateway uses some strange BIOSes with few choices.
