qemu -fda freedos.img

When I wrote the directions, I assumed that you would use a floppy
disk image. If the image file is an ISO9660 CD image, change 'fda' to
'cdrom'.

The image is what I downloaded from the qemu site to my hard drive. It was about a 1.5MB bz2 images which I expanded with bunzip2 to 10MB.
I don't have that size floppy drive.

It booted with 'qemu freedos.img' but I don't know how to access any files with it and C: claims to be empty, unlike dosemu.

I have not tested with SW91 SDL or with the 10MB FreeDOS image. Please
try the BL3.4 image and let us know if you have the same problem.

Tomorrow. We got that computer to boot consistently and find its CD-ROM drive by reinserting the DIMMs.

C: no files
a: Dir
Drive Not Ready

Trying to mount it after this in linux gives lots of I/O errors in sector
0 and X has crashed (to a blinking cursor) and I had to power off and this
computer will only boot once a day.

Mount what? If you did not specify any real drives (e.g. /dev/fd0) on
the command line then there should be no problem.

David

I typed
qemu freedos.img

How do I access files on the hard drive or floppy drive from qemu?
C: appears to be empty. A: is not accessible (or the floppy disk may have been defective, I suppose).

James said he tested Wordperfect for DOS in Freedos under qemu. How?
