No, it appears to be a capital O not a zero. I must have incompletely deleted something during a slow connection with lag. When I telnet with DOS the lag is really bad.

I was told to also compile freetype to get libwmf for wmf support.
I looked on the web and wmf is a Windows vector graphics format.
Nobody ever sent me that - would other people appreciate if I
included it?

Wvware's libwmf support is fairly primitive right now. Freetype is
probably not very appropriate for a mini-Linux.
I will happily skip it. The person who suggested it likes to be thorough.

The first time I looked at the wvWare site, I mistakenly thought
that it is used to put bitmap graphics in Word documents.
You did not read far enough to learn their opinion of Word ;=)

Replace -lpng with /usr/lib/libpng.so.2 when you link it.

I don't know where to replace this (after ./configure or in a script used by configure?) but will either figure it out, or temporarily rename libpng.so.3 while compiling.

Do I also need to point the compiler at the libc6 so it won't try
to use libc5 or does it use the later of the two?

The latter/later.
Lovely.

The new glibc is needed for opera, lynx, and xpdf, but they don't
need a new libz or libpng. They seem to work fine with the old
ones. But it is probably easier to compile dynamically and not
worry about BL3.

Or fully static.

For that would I have to compile libz and libpng myself? I had to compile libz in order to compile lynx statically (the package from SW71 may not have included the .a file, or else I was supposed to be using the latest version of libz). I also had to compile open-ssl and ncurses and everything kept going wrong so I think dynamic compilation would avoid a lot of problems. But I will compile any way you advise if you want to drag me through it. How much larger would it be to make it static with regard to libc?

All of the netpbm binaries depend upon libnetpbm, so I don't see any
advantage to manually compiling some of them.

The problem I am dealing with is that the tiff programs will not
work in BL2 since I have a libtiff in there for libc6 and the one
from netpbm replaces it (same synlink, both libtiff.so.3) and then
other programs needed libtiff don't work (links2 from delilinux).
So I have a choice of the netpbm tiff programs, or links2, in BL2.
A statically compiled pair of tiff programs would fix this problem.
Static as regards libtiff, not libnetpbm. I have not found any
need to deal with tiff files but someone else might want the
programs.

But since tiffs are so rare, it is not as much of a bother to switch
libraries temporarily, is it?

Do you think I should advise switching libraries? Someone who knows how to do that might also know how to compile this for themself. A beginner, on the other hand, could make a real mess of things. I have often done that.

I have no idea how to access a library that is not on the path.
Would it involve exporting something in profile, like I do to use
gs with a device that is not the default?

LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/local/lib/" tifftopnm

^ looks in /usr/local/lib/ for libraries. You can export it, but then
you're back to square one.

Do I repeat this line for pnmtotiff or list both on one line? In /etc/profile?

I could suggest that users of BL2 do this themselves if they want to deal with tiffs.

This knowledge will be helpful if I ever need to use another libc5 package with BL2. Thanks.

Sindi
