I have libz.a and can get libpng.a from some SW package (where I
got libpng.so for links2). What is lib*_p.a?

I believe it's a profiled version. Only useful if you're trying to
figure out what part of a program gets used the most (which usually
means it's slowing everything down).

So I should be able to safely delete all such libraries, and also any .a library unless I want to compile something statically. I think I will stick with dynamic, including wvware, to save space, especially since Abiword is available for BL3 already and includes wvware.

You can always run a ramdisk version.

Yes but it will not do most of what I am using it for.

I will put the png and tiff programs in a separate package for BL3
and warn people that they may have problems in BL2 if they already
have (or later add) a libpng or libtiff of the same version number
or earlier. I might suggest sticking the libc5 libraries in
/usr/local/lib and pointing programs at them in /etc/profile.

Pointing programs at them in /etc/profile??

Apparently this is not what you meant - see below.

LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/local/lib/" tifftopnm

^ looks in /usr/local/lib/ for libraries. You can export it, but then
you're back to square one.

ld.so looks for libraries in whichever directory is selected by
LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Exporting this is probably not what you want to
do, as then every program will look there.

I might put theses libraries in /usr/libc5 - or is there a more traditional place to put libc5 libraries on a libc6 linux?

>> So for tifftopnm, pnmtotiff, pngtopnm and pnmtopng I
would put four such lines (each with a different program at the
end) WHERE if not /etc/profile?

You enter it in at the command line when you want to run the program
in question. Don't put it in a configuration file.

Can I make a script libc5

LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/libc5" %1 %2

Then type

libc5 tifftopnm filename.tiff > filename.png ?

Similarly for pnmtotiff pngtopnm pnmtopng.

It would be nice if libc5-dependent programs would just look in a different place for their libraries. It is possible to do that?
How do other people with both libc5 and libc6 on their computers handle this? I noticed that SW71 has libc5 for optional installation.
