Sounds like cdda2wav isn't coping with the copy protection, which is odd, it usually doesn't have any problems with it when I use it, what version are you using? Mine is cdda2wav version 2.01a19_linux_2.6.8-1.541smp_i686_i686, and it handles all CD's fine.
I am using what came with SW7.1 cdrtools, which appears to be 1.9.2.
SW8.1 seems to have 1.11a24. I did not find source code for a later version (or a cdda2wav home page). What libc is your version compiled for?
I have not found anything on the CD or cover about copy protection.
Ok, well I have one that has a copy protection logo on the back and it won't even PLAY on all but one of my computers.
What does it look like?
Some online reading led me to the fact that other people have had this problem and it is due to an intentionally erroneous checksum embedded in the last track which causes it to go in loops and time out. cdparanoia and cdda2wav have the same problem. (Have not tried DOS cd2wav on it). Someone said it is possible to copy all but the last track so I am currently attempting to record the first halves of three different CDs onto one blank as an experiment. I hope Bach, von Weber, and Wynton Marsalis like each other.
Ok, hope to find out what's going on :) .
Copy protection seems to be the problem, and so far my only solution is to not record the last track if it gives me errors (and to select Philips CDs if I want to practice recording the whole CD).
Something to watch out for. What year did they start randomizing? Our library has a lot of 1990-92 CDs.
It started in the late 90's and now there is some form of copy protection on almost all CD's, unfortunately. Most of it can be bypassed by recent versions of CD rippers, however.
Sounds like any other evolutionary race. So that is why we are advised to get recent versions of cdrtools.
We don't lack a cable, it was just not playing through it one day.
Today it all worked on the first try and the CD-ROM is playing out through the sound card with no changes in cabling. Electronics can be fussy.
Indeed, I lack a cable like that too, and I can't play CD's.
Would you like me to send you a cable? We have extras. You can plug your speakers in through the jack in front of most CD drives.
Don't know for sure, although sometimes they record a seperate track at the end, and they hide it in there.
Would that also interfere with playing the last track?
Yes, it would. Basically, they add an extra track, but they don't put it in the CD's Table of Contents, so the ripper just keeps on going and doesn't stop when it reaches the data track. This is why the ripper messes up.
This happens even when I tell it to just record the last track.
I was going to ask why a Windows music CD copier (Nero) worked when the linux cdda2wav did not - Nero must also have bypassed the copy protection.
Are there newer CDs that the newer cdda2wav still cannot handle?
