Is swapping to a swap file faster than swapping
to regular hard drive?

I believe a swap partition is slightly faster than
a swap file; however, both are significantly faster
(and more stable) than what the kernel does when it
runs out of working memory.

Can you suggest what test I might use to compare with and without swap file in cli mode (since I am unlikely to be using X) on a computer with loop BL3, other than compressing a very large file? I cannot think of a case where we would need to do that on this computer. (Actually I cannot think of using this as a portable computer since keyboard and monitor have problems, but we might run into something else similar).

Can I make a swap file within the loop instead of using 6.7M of the non-linux part of the DOS partition? I would also prefer to try just 2M and see if we run into problems, as this drive is short on space.

Could I just make a batch file to make a swap file when needed, so as to have the space free for other things the rest of the time (such as DOS programs or maybe linux programs)?

Cheers,
Steven
