How can I turn off color for ls?

Use ls from Slackware 4.0. The busybox ls is hardwired
for color.

Ok. How do I get back my cursor that I have in DOS but not in linux except when using e3? BL3. It works fine for me on a TTL monitor, with cursor.

In X, I have a choice between plugging in a mouse
or a modem.

I assume you have only one COM port. I assume you are
using an external modem.
Yes. I don't think X is appropriate for this computer anyway. But if i try to use with links I can't use a mouse.

I have been checking swap file usage. 112 when I am
not in X, maximum,

Are you sure that's really the maximum? Are you checking
swap at peak load (while processes are working hard)?
Or are you checking it from the CLI (when things are
fairly quiet)?

I check repeatedly every few seconds. Links is the only program I loaded other than pppd or free or top. I check from the CLI on one terminal while loading links on the other terminal.

even while loading links or telnet; or dialing.

If you want a demanding process, try gzip. My laptop
(12mb RAM), uses swap when it gzips a large tar.

Okay, I will try that some time but I don't have the hard drive space to zip/unzip anything very large. 7MB free in DOS. 40MB hard drive.

I think 6.7MB is too much for this system.

I disagree.

What would I use more for on a computer designed primarily for practicing writing shell scripts? We would like a bit more DOS space. lxpic is much faster at viewing than xli so we might use DOS for anything graphical.

I recommend not bothering with swap file on a 4.7MB
laptop, and not using X.

I disagree.

Do you need a swap file to use as an X terminal? I would not use it standalone with X is what I meant.

Or using X with 3MB swap file only.

I disagree.

When would I want to use X with more than that on this slow a computer?

The computer is just too slow to wait for it to be
swapping things around.

Swapping things around is actually faster than loading/
unloading things (which is what happens when you have
insufficient working memory)

Is swapping to a swap file faster than swapping to regular hard drive?

Cheers,
Steven
