I could not login via telnet as root.
Various websites said to add to securetty as devices
pts/0 to pts/9 - what are these?

Your telnet login will tell you which device you are
coming in on. It is probably: ttyp1

securetty comes with four lines starting in # and
continuing with ttyp0 through 3 which I uncommented.

Those are the ones for telnet.

Various websites said to log in as user and then su root.

su gives super user (root) access to ordinary users
(if they know the root password).

I will get it from shadow.tgz and try it but why do that instead of just log in as root? Is it really more secure somehow? I am tired of running into things user cannot do, such as write files to disk.

Well, now I can telnet or do send/receive between two
computers hooked up with ethernet cable, both in linux,
but not over serial cable.

/root/netsetup has a template for networking via serial cable.

Thanks. I presume I need to figure out a DOS ppp program first.

Cheers,
Steven
