Using the loop version of 3.3, to which I have added icewm, and which I have set up with 800 res and higher color depth, I reproduced James' problem by typing:
xinit -- /usr/X11R6/bin/Xvesa -screen 640x480x4 &rxvt
and then typing links2 -g
I got the same error message. So it is not the video card but the color depth to which links2 seems to be objecting.
Then I tried 2-bit color (black and white) and got the same error message.
I then tried 8-bit color, which Xvesa does not like. Icewm came onscreen in red and blue. Links2 -g works, but looks really strange. It added green. The screen-top headings (menu when you hit ESC) are not readable (blotchy colors).
In BL2 links two in SVGAlib mode works in 16 colors but not in 2 or 4.
It can also be used in 256 colors, which Xvesa does not allow.
links2 -g -mode 640x480x4.
Pink instead of grey background.
Would it make links2 much larger to compile it to work with SVGAlib if it does not already do so, for use on plain VGA computer monitors? Maybe one version for SVGAlib and another for X, if not one for both?

None of which use X.
The Links2 browser seemed to install ok. But it won't run.

No supported color depth found

Sounds like an X problem. Does rxvt and the other built-in
X applications work? If so, what resolution did you select
in Xsetup?
This is a little LCD screen that only does 640x480.
I wonder if links2 actually works in X with 16-color VGA.
Or does links2 require better resolution than that?
Not in SVGAlib mode, but apparently in X mode, or at least that is how this version was compiled.
Cheers,
Steven
