We have one computer where Realplayer did install without any problems,
but I had not tried it because Ron's instructions were for sb16 only and
this has an onboard ESS chip. Since ISA SB16 seems to be causing problems
for other people (play and bplay gave error messages with both my cards) I
decided (around 3 am) to give the ESS a try. Windows is using it with
essolo.com (ESS solo chip) so I copied over all the es*.o modules and
tried just substituting the most likely one (esssolo1.o) for the sb line
(sixth module insmodded - I don't know if I still need v_midi or uart401
like I do with sb). It worked, no need to specify io, irq or dma as I had
to do for sb.

Tried workbone. Had to change the link for /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdb from
/dev/scd0 - which I hope will not mess up cdrecord (which works on this
machine). It plays.

Tried play - it also plays, no error messages about audio size buffer!
Someone else had written in that their ess card (3170?) worked with sox
when another card (SB) did not. Is this onboard chip PCI perhaps? It was
easier to set up than SB. My SB cards are all ISA, but the message when
doing insmod was that ALL sb cards need to specify parameters.

PCI SB cards worked with sox play when ISA cards did not for other
people.

I will try a few other SB cards and then the ESS cards (PCI would free up
a slot for the ISA MGA card) in my other computer. The ESS cards need
powered speakers. We have one pair. Boomboxes with line in also work
well as powered speakers.

Anyone know what module is used by Vibra16 cards?

Set up Opera, file types, to open files with extension rpm (in Opera
already as a default) and also typed in 'rmm ra ram' with realplayer (I
searched for it in /usr/local/bin) and opened that file while in the Opera
file types edit menu and it copied path and file name to the proper line
(below 'default' line - there is no default for this file type).

Tried to dial - our ISP is still down, it has been for three days. (Free
account from a local community college where Jim learned to program C++,
between semesters, probably down for a remodel.)

At least my dial-up shell account still works so here I am, telnetted from
there. More news when the ISP is working again.

This still does not fix the problem of the disappearing libXp.so.6 when
attempting to install Realaudio. Some odd bug?
