We have some pretty old computers but people keep giving us working CD-ROM
burners and now we have three of them. They must be replacing them with
faster ones. I have DOS CD-burning software that I have not yet tried.
What would I need to burn CDs with linux? A different kernel?

Our CD burner takes 1/2 hour to copy a 1 hour music CD. At 2x burn.

The only CD we burnt was a copy of a CD-burning program for Windows. We
might make a copy of SW71 some day.

I like basiclinux. The ready-made CDs seem to include things I don't want
like desktops. It might be fun to have a CD of everything I got working
with basiclinux to try on friends' computers but I am not capable of that
for a while yet.

I am not going to download a lot of stuff by modem to burn to CD.
I can try making something small given enough detailed instructions. I
have never burned anything to CD with linux yet.
