Take a look and see where the libreadline file ended up. Probably the
installation program put it into /usr/lib/ .

As an experiment you could copy libreadline.so.3 to /tmp and then
uninstall elflibs and then copy just libreadline.so.3 to /usr/lib/ and see
if ftp still works.
