Will linux (BL) ignore the BIOS here (is the kernel compiled to do so) and
find the whole drive?

Yes. Kernels up to the 2.2.x range can address up to 138 GB, so he should
be fine.

I just read on the Linux-Kernel mailing list archive,
<http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0011.1/0056.html>
and it seems to say that 2.2.16 does _not_ permit you to access
32GB if your BIOS/IDE controller cannot. However, the author
of this post provided a patch to fix this. Do you want to build
your own kernel with this patch or should I?

Jonathan thinks he has solved his problem. First he wrote the company that bought out AWARD and they asked for his BIOS number in order to make him a custom upgrade, then offered him a standard one for $69.95. He pointed out that this was twice what the hard drive cost ($30 after rebates) so they offered the upgrade for $39.95. DFI's four upgrades were not relevant. He eventually told BIOS that there was no primary slave hard drive, instead of letting it find the 32GB to which he had jumpered it, and Redhat's installation program was able to recognize 80GB of the drive which BIOS did not find at all.

I will ask him whether the BL3 kernel could also find 80GB.

Apparently Best Buy no longer sells anything smaller than this. And a 2GB from ebay would be about $10 with shipping and have no guarantees.

He plans to do a lot of compiling now that he no longer has to worry about space. 700MB was not enough before.
