IMHO NO(I feel very strongly about this) I don't like to use some random thing
to set a version. I prefer for the VERSION=[whatever_scm_it_uses] approach
for non automatic(i.e. VERSION=cvs, VERSION=svn and so on).

It was discussed several times.
The VERSION=$(date +%Y%m%d) is the only way as to ensure the sources will be updated for normal users.
Not all our users are linux specialists, they only want to use their favourite application.
They use Source Mage because we provide CVS version of that application.

Personally I would like Source Mage to be more user friendly.
I know most of you prefer Source Mage to be administrator friendly.
Of course according to this we provide default options.

I suggested for example tools for automatic deleting old linux kernels trees (/usr/src/linux-OLD).
I know users which have tens unpacked kernels in /usr/src and they are surprised they have no disk space.
I just dealed with another kernel related problem. User ask me why he doesn't use the last linux kernel.
After installing and reboot the command "gaze installed linux" prints the last one but the "uname -r" prints old one.
The problem was with /etc/lilo.conf (a lot of images, Fatal: Bitmap table has space for only 7 images).
Do we want to solve this kind of problems or no?
Administrators don't want some scripts to edited their /etc/lilo.conf or removed sources from /usr/src/linux-xxx.
Users would appreciate it.

Back to VERSION.
I prefer VERSION=$(date +%Y%m%d).
Moreover I would like to have some options to drop compiling a cvs (svn, bk, ...) spells when nothing changed (maybe parsing the cvs update output?).
See http://bugs.sourcemage.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8052 (better support for cvs and svn version of spells).

The strange is I am not able to read http://www.sourcemage.org/spell-multi_version
(Access denied You are not authorized to access this page).
