Which kernel flag ?
It required no kernel flag for me.
I selected these two in make menuconfig
[*] /dev file system support (EXPERIMENTAL)
[*] Automatically mount at boot
then I removed the "devfs=nomount" from /etc/lilo.conf.
Reran lilo.
Then got devfsd to run from an init script and every thing worked fine.
kernel makes all the devices at boot and devfsd manages them.
