Ok ... I have tried to follow the instructions listed to change
to only a /dev system.
My problem is that now I am unable to login as root?
I can login as user and su to root but if I enter root at command
line login it pauses for a few seconds (never brings up option to
enter password) and the says login failed and prompt to
login comes back.
Have I done something inherently wrong?
1) I installed devfsd
2) Changed mount.sh as advised
3) altered fstab and lilo and inittab to point to /dev where applicable
4) reran lilo
5) rebooted
Craig

Which kernel flag ?
It required no kernel flag for me.
I selected these two in make menuconfig
[*] /dev file system support (EXPERIMENTAL)
[*] Automatically mount at boot
then I removed the "devfs=nomount" from /etc/lilo.conf.
Reran lilo.
Then got devfsd to run from an init script and every thing worked fine.
kernel makes all the devices at boot and devfsd manages them.
