Hi Amy,

Can you possibly gather together your group of local resources for an event
so
that your local folks know what is already available? Or circulate a flyer
which
lists them (with contact info for each, for further information)?

I don't think you have too much to worry about if Trader Joe's comes to town
though. We have them here (SF). I really like them, they're pretty big on
cost-effective and fair-trade conscious products. They are my only local
source
of cold-pressed extra virgin Kalamata Olive oil and live Basil plants.
I strongly suggest you make a research excursion to the one closest to you to
check it out.

We have wonderful local farmers' markets here where I live also, nothing will
ever beat that. Including Trader Joe's. TJ's doesn't take any business away
from
our farmers' markets at all. It does compete very, very effectively with the
big
chain groceries though.

JM $.02

Namaste,

Linda

Subject: [permaculture] Trader Joe's

Hi Folks,
I am hoping to enlighten my local community on why we DON'T need a Trader
Joe's
in our community - that our local farmers markets, coops and locally owned
health food store are better places to buy our food.

Anyone want to help articulate this? I have never even been to a Trader Joe's!

Thanks,
Amy

I'm with Linda - I don't think Trader Joe's is a threat to farmers markets,
and it competes effectively with big chains, and offers high-quality staples
and other food items not available at farmer's markets. I've experienced it
as a nice addition to the farmer's market.

What you might do is create a permaculture win-win: turn the "problem" into
an asset. Together with other interested citizens, you might consider
approaching Trader Joe's folks and letting them know that since a lot of
their customers are the same kinds of people who shop at the farmer's market,
it might be to everyone's best interest to form a mutual public-relations
arrangement. TJ's could allow the farm market vendors/organizers to place
their literature inside the store, and the farmer's market folks could offer
in return to place TJ coupons and other literature at their booths. Just a
thought!
