Walnut cultivars are propagated by grafting.

Walnuts from the grocery store might or might not germinate after stratification, and they might or might not (probably not) suit your area.

Consider whether you are interested in Persian/English (Carpathian etc.) walnuts, or the native black walnut, or both.

You may wish to consult the Northern Nut Growers Association (actually covers most of the U.S.) and maybe join them:

There are state nutgrowing associations affliated with NNGA in many states. These are a very valuable source of local information.
