Brent, do you have any pictures/documentation of your site online?
Justin, land prices have gone down drastically around here in the Kickapoo Valley of Southwest Wisconsin. Perhaps still outside your price range but something to consider is that one of the counties here has the most organic farms (not acres) in the US. The county next to it has 2 15+ year old permaculture sites; our small 3 acre demonstration at Dreamtime Village & Mark Shepard's farm style permculture as New Forest Farm, about 4 miles from here.
Scott, I would take searching for free land on the net with a grain of salt, but perhaps you were making a joke & I missed it.

Hi Justin:
I bought my first parcel of farm land 25 years ago on a land contract
with a down-payment of $600. It was 13 acres.
It had been tenant farmed for years. The top soil was pretty much fried.
It has since gone through two 10 year CRP contracts to rebuild the top
soil.
I've added two more parcels since purchasing the initial 13 acres. It's
now 32 acres. The place is totally transformed. It has exploded with
wildlife. You couldn't even find a squirrel twenty five years ago. Now
there are owls, pheasants, hawks, herons, geese, raccoons, deer ....
that all call this place home.

Hello all,
Do any of you have any tips on acquiring inexpensively-priced land? It
doesn't have to be the best land, nor does it have to be developed or
settled land. Just land to live and permaculture on. The author of a blog I
read (Ran Prieur) acquired a few acres of logged out Idaho land from a
logging company on the cheap. I'm wondering if there are any other ways to
get land without taking out a mortgage or leasing it.
Degraded land (logged out, intensively farmed, etc) especially would be
good.
I'm thinking about $10,000-20,000.
Best regards and thank you for your wisdom.
