Diane,

American persimmons are almost a disease in my part of the country. The possums, deer and cows all feast on these autumn fruits and spread the seeds like crazy. Persimmon trees grow like mad and can actually get rather large. Most of the ones you may see are about 2-4 inches in diameter because the farmers/cattle growers try to get rid of them. There is one on our old homestead that sports a trunk diameter of about 3 feet and is about 100 feet high.

Long answer short, all my experiences have been a resounding 'YES'.

I would like to try to grow some American persimmons for the first time. I have never even seen an American persimmon tree, but I ate a fruit once. It was very small (walnut sized) but yummy.

Is it an ok idea to try growing American persimmon from seed? And if so does anyone know a source for persimmon seeds?

I'm in southern Iowa, zone 5.

Thanks,
Diane Porter
