I had a friend in Cottage Grove, WI (just east of Madison) who had planted a grove of D. americana that was growing well. The year that I visited in the fall the trees had quite a few fruits. I believe he said that they fruited regularly, although the fall to the ground was far enough that most of them got smashed when they landed. I took some home and started the seeds, but the seedlings still in the pot (above ground) didn't survive their first winter so I can't say if they would have grown here just north of Madison. I'm pretty sure that I bought some Am. persimmon cultivars from One Green World when I first moved here. They died, but that may have been from neglect rather than the climate.

Hello folks. As some of you know, I'm working on a sort of online
non-commercial repository for everything persimmon-related. While I'm
focusing on Diospyros virginiana, I'll be adding some asian persimmon
content as well.
I was wondering if some folks here might lend a hand. It was an
extremely important food historically. As settlers expanded throughout
the US, many times, so did their plants.
The USDA database has a failry broad "natural" range. It lists the
following states as part of the range:
AL
AR
DC
DE
FL
GA
IA
IL
IN
KS
KY
LA
MD
MO
MS
NC
NE
NJ
NY
OH
OK
PA
RI
SC
TN
TX
WV
It also lists UT, but I would tend to think it's more due to settlement.
Anyway, I can confirm common persimmons being grown (and producing
usable fruit) in these additional states (off the top of my head):
CA
ID
OR
UT
also the following non-US countries:
Canada (Ontario)
Spain
France
UK (England)
Do any of you grow this in an area not mentioned above?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
