There are farmers who use sewer sludge all the time. I prefer not to eat
from those fields.

Commercial sewage sludge may have all sorts of interesting things in it, including heavy metals. People put all sorts of things down the sink or john that don't belong there.

If the people in Virginia were careful what they put down the drain, I doubt there was any problem with the apples, by the time the material was filtered through the tree's systems; the apples would never have directly contacted the sewage. And if it stank, wouldn't they have found the leak sooner?

Not an acceptable material for certification, though : )
