Thanks. I've been looking up pomegranates on the web, and they sound perfect: drought tolerant, not fussy about soil, and okay at room temps for most of the year. Also attractive and mildly exotic. I'm torn between eversweet (which might be hard to keep small enough) and nana, which sounds like a nuisance to eat, but is probably the better ornamental, and would fit the space well. But I love pomegranates, and it would be a lot of fun to grow my own. . .
Raintree says 150 chill hours. Do you know how cool it needs to get. Just wondering if cool nights in the house might be enough, or if that's unreasonable. 50F? 40F? I suppose I could take it outside for a month in the spring or fall and still have a nice houseplant most of the year.
And I will try alpine strawberries as well, in a long low planter.

But as I think further... you might want to grow a variety with full-size
fruit. I'm thinking "Eversweet", available at Raintree. Although the seeds
are red, the juice is clear, and there aren't so many seedpits in the pulpy
fruit. They're also sweet, and require fewer warm/hot days to set fruit,
which should be better for you. Outdoors, it can reach 10 feet, but people
do grow this variety in pots for indoor/outdoor culture.

Thanks for all the good ideas. I need something drought tolerant, and
not too big. At the moment I'm leaning towards a calemondin or
kumquat, because I know I can grow citrus indoors. But some of the
other ideas are intriguing. Neither is great to eat (to my palate) but
they make a nice relish and the flowers smell great.
Folks have suggested figs and peaches and persimmons and pomegranate,
but don't they need a cold dormant period to thrive? Of these, if I
could grow a miniature peach or pomegranate, I would give it a try.
Anyone know a source for a dwarf pomegranate?
I love the idea of passion flower. The vine could grow up my cactus.
:) the one time I had a plant it died (lack of water) but that was
when I was ten, who knows, I might do better now. Alpine strawberries
are small enough that I don't need to use up my "big" space for them.
I will have to give them a try indoors and see what happens. Hey -
inside I wouldn't lose all the fruit to birds and chipmunks. I think I
have a good pot for that.
The Surinam Cherry looks intriguing. I've never heard of a strawberry
guava, either.
Thanks again. I'll let you know what I get.
