You are in Michigan, in zone 5, and it's barely April. A reputable retail company shouldn't be sending you tender green vines until late April, or May, unless you specifically requested it. If they mostly do wholesale, they might be used to shipping to growers with greenhouses. If this was a regular retail operation, I would ask them for a refund or replacement. I've now bought hundreds of plants, (okay, that includes bulbs, but dozens of orders) and have only once asked for a replacement - the plant was mislabelled. So I am not one to rush for a refund. But this really sounds like their fault.

We have frequent late frosts here too. Can you or anyone else suggest which
varieties are the latest to leaf out? I'm determined to grow some kiwis

OK then, if they are exposed to anything below 32 degrees it won't matter
if they're hardened off or not. Kiwi foliage, especially new growth, will
freeze below that temperature. I've found that that's the major problem
for me with hardy kiwi. Virtually every year we get frost two or three
times after the buds break and it always means the vines have to start all
over again. I haven't seen any secondary buds with blossoms like
grapes. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen, I just haven't seen it
yet. Once they get big enough, the upper branches can sometimes protect
the foliage underneath so I usually get a small crop, but I find it very
frustrating year after year.

Sorry for your loss. I know how it feels.

They were leafed out, but as I said I had them up against the house and
under the overhang, which I believe should give them a few more degrees.
